Shedding Light on an Invisible Dental Threat
Periodontal disease (gum disease) is an infection of the gums surrounding your teeth. Many patients are not aware that they have periodontal disease because it can be pain free. One way to check for periodontal disease is measuring the space between the teeth and gums.
Types of Periodontal Disease
There are two types of periodontal disease that can threaten your dental health.
GINGIVITIS
The earliest stage of periodontal disease is characterized by the gums becoming red and swollen and bleeding easily. This stage is known as gingivitis. At this stage, periodontal disease is still treatable. It can often be eliminated with thorough daily brushing and flossing.
PERIODONTITIS
Gingivitis can advance into periodontitis if left untreated. Serious damage and infection of the gums can cause teeth to become loose, fall out, or require removal by a dentist.
